ローマ教皇(在位1294年―1303年)。中世的教皇権の再興に努め,近世国家の絶対主義王権をめざすフランス国王フィリップ4世に対抗。1296年フランスの聖職者課税に反対し,1302年教書〈ウナム・サンクタム〉で教権が俗権にまさることを宣した。しかし1303年アナーニ事件でフィリップに敗れ,憤激のうちに没。その死後教権は衰退。
