ローマ教皇（在位1294年―1303年）。中世的教皇権の再興に努め，近世国家の絶対主義王権をめざすフランス国王フィリップ４世に対抗。1296年フランスの聖職者課税に反対し，1302年教書〈ウナム・サンクタム〉で教権が俗権にまさることを宣した。しかし1303年アナーニ事件でフィリップに敗れ，憤激のうちに没。その死後教権は衰退。
