In archaic Japanese, it is called "kamashishi" and among the general public, it is also called "iwashika" or "aoushishi". It often lives on cliffs to avoid predators, and standing on rocks for long periods of time in winter is called "kandachi". Until the 1940s, it was hunted in various parts of Japan, and its fur was popular among workers in mountain villages, mainly for its protection from the cold and waterproofing.
