The poll tax system was implemented in the Philippines under Spanish colonial rule. The Spanish government used two systems, tributo and polo (forced labor), to exact harsh swindles from the Philippine population. Tributo was levied on each family or pair of adults (tributario), and the amount was eight silver reals per year when it was established in 1571, and roughly ten reals from the 17th century onwards. It was increased to 12 reals in 1851 and 14 reals in 1874, before being abolished in 1884. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
