Year of birth: 1654
A doctor and scholar of historical research in the mid-Edo period. His pen name was Shojun and his pen name was Kyorindo. He was born as the son of Owariya, a ship wholesaler in Noshiro, Akita (although one theory is that he was born in Takatsu, Osaka), and later moved to Osaka to study under Ito Ryotatsu, who was also from Noshiro. He studied medicine under Wake Chuan, became a physician at Osaka Castle, and was bestowed the title of Hokkyo. Influenced by the theory of divination and medicine that was widespread during the Ming dynasty, he believed that one could only be a true physician if one had a broad understanding of the three elements of heaven, earth, and man, and wrote Japan's first illustrated encyclopedia, Wakan Sansai Zue (1712), modeled after the Chinese Sansai Zue. In addition to this book, which he completed more than 30 years after he was in his late 20s, he also wrote other books, such as Sansai Shoshin Honki, Saiseiho, Kobo Daishi Ryakuden, and Decoction for Smallpox. 江戸中期の医者,考証家。字は尚順,号は杏林堂。秋田能代の船問屋尾張屋の息子として生まれ(一説に大坂高津生まれとも),のちに大坂に移って同じ能代出身の伊藤良立に学ぶ。医学を和気仲安に学び,大坂城の御城入医師となり,法橋に叙せられた。明代に広まった易医論の影響のもと,天地人三才に広く通じてこそはじめて真の医家であるという考えに立って,中国の『三才図会』にならい,わが国最初の絵入り百科『和漢三才図会』(1712)を著した。20歳代後半から30余年を経て脱稿した本書のほか,『三才諸神本紀』『済世宝』『弘法大師略伝』『湯液痘疹良方』などの著書がある。没年は享保年間(1716～36)末期ごろと思われる。<参考文献>島田勇雄「『和漢三才図会』2解説(平凡社東洋文庫)」
