Year of death: Unknown (Year of death unknown) Year of birth: 1654 A doctor and scholar of historical research in the mid-Edo period. His pen name was Shojun and his pen name was Kyorindo. He was born as the son of Owariya, a ship wholesaler in Noshiro, Akita (although one theory is that he was born in Takatsu, Osaka), and later moved to Osaka to study under Ito Ryotatsu, who was also from Noshiro. He studied medicine under Wake Chuan, became a physician at Osaka Castle, and was bestowed the title of Hokkyo. Influenced by the theory of divination and medicine that was widespread during the Ming dynasty, he believed that one could only be a true physician if one had a broad understanding of the three elements of heaven, earth, and man, and wrote Japan's first illustrated encyclopedia, Wakan Sansai Zue (1712), modeled after the Chinese Sansai Zue. In addition to this book, which he completed more than 30 years after he was in his late 20s, he also wrote other books, such as Sansai Shoshin Honki, Saiseiho, Kobo Daishi Ryakuden, and Decoction for Smallpox. He is thought to have died towards the end of the Kyoho era (1716-1736). <References> Isao Shimada, "Wakan Sansai Zue 2 Commentary (Heibonsha Toyo Bunko)" (Hidemi Ishida) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
