A general term for copyrights, industrial property rights, and other rights guaranteed by law for electronic information such as computer programs, databases, and multimedia works. Intellectual property rights are synonymous with intellectual property rights and are also called intangible property rights. In general, electronic information is characterized by the fact that it can be used very easily in a variety of ways, such as by copying, sending it over a network, downloading it, and creating new electronic information that incorporates its contents. However, if valuable information is allowed to be used by others without the creator's consent, the creator may hesitate to show it to others, and in extreme cases, may lose the desire to create it.

コンピュータープログラム，データベース，マルチメディア作品のように電子化された情報に関し，法律によって保証された著作権，工業所有権等の権利の総称。知的所有権は知的財産権と同義語であり，無体財産権ともいう。　一般に電子情報は，複製，ネットワーク上の送信やダウンロード，その内容を取り込んだ新たな電子情報の作成等，さまざまな利用がきわめて容易にできる点に特徴がある。しかし，価値のある情報を作成した人の意思に反して他人が勝手に利用するのを認めてしまうと，作成者は，他人に見せることを躊躇し，極端な場合には作成意欲を失う恐れがある。
