Mokranjac, S.

...The center of musical activity in the 18th century was the Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Sea, where composers such as Luka Sorkočević (1734-89) and Julije Bajamonti (1744-1800) were active, but in the 19th century the center of activity shifted to the Croatian capital of Zagreb, where composers such as Vatroslav Lisinski (1819-54), Ivan Zajc (1832-1914), Davorin Jenko (1835-1914), and others wrote nationalistic operas and patriotic choral pieces inspired by the spirit of Slavic nationalism and the desire for national independence against the rule of the Habsburg Empire. On the other hand, Western music began to be introduced to southeastern regions such as Serbia and Macedonia, which had long been under Turkish rule, after they gained independence from Turkey in 1830. Kornelije Stanković (1831-65) and Stevan Mokranjac (1856-1914) contributed to the establishment of modern Serbian music with many works that made use of the traditions of church music in the Serbian Orthodox Church. After World War II, in addition to the artistic activities of socialist realism, Yugoslavia also became a base for the international avant-garde music movement with the Zagreb International Biennale of Contemporary Music.
