...The plot of this old tale overlaps with the appearance of a god who is said to visit on New Year's Eve, and Jizo's hat is also seen as a headgear that symbolizes the New Year's god. This is also why, although it takes the form of Jizo, this old tale is classified as a "guest of the New Year." The story of a poor old man who suddenly changes into a wealthy old man blessed with rice, rice cakes, firewood, gold and silver on New Year's Eve reflects the spirit of simple people of the past who believed that New Year's Eve brought good luck and changed one's destiny.
