The orchestra was formed in 1870 when the group performed in the hall of the newly built Chamber of Commerce in Dresden. It was named the Gewerbehaus Orchestra after the hall, but changed its name to its current one in 1915. The orchestra's foundations were laid by Paul van Kempen (1893-1955), who served as principal conductor from 1934 to 1942, and Heinz Bongartz (1894-), who re-established the orchestra after World War II. Herbert Kegel (1920-) has served as principal conductor since 1974. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
