〘Noun〙 ("Shippei" is the Tang and Song pronunciation of "bamboo pick")① A bamboo walking stick. A ritual implement usually used in Zen Buddhism. Used by masters to instruct scholars. Made from split bamboo, joined together, wrapped in rattan and coated with lacquer, it resembles a bow. 〘名〙 (「しっぺい」は「竹篦」の唐宋音)① 竹製の杖(つえ)。ふつう禅宗で用いる法具。師家が学人の教導に用いるもの。竹を割ってこれを合わせ、籐(とう)を巻いて漆を塗った、弓に似たもの。しつべい。※正法眼蔵(1231‐53)画餠「拄杖・竹篦をして一老一不老ならしむ」② 人さし指と中指をそろえて、相手の手首などをはじき打つこと。※日葡辞書(1603‐04)「Xippeiuo(シッペイヲ) ハジク」③ (形動) ①の形に似ているさま。※今年竹(1919‐27)〈里見弴〉枯竹「白じろとした額から、しっぺいにさがった眉のあたり」
