Senda Koreya - Senda Koreya

Director and actor. His real name was Ito Kunio. He was born in Tokyo. He was the younger brother of dancer Ito Michio and stage designer Ito Kisaku. He graduated from Tokyo Prefectural First Middle School. After auditing German literature at Waseda University, he joined the Tsukiji Little Theater, which was founded in 1924 (Taisho 13), as a member of the literary club and an acting student, and made his debut as a sailor in "The Sea Battle," one of the theater's inaugural productions. He studied in Germany for four years from 1927 (Showa 2), and participated in revolutionary theater for workers. Immediately after returning to Japan, he formed the Tokyo Theater Group, a unified organization of theater people, including light theater performers, and performed "The Beggar's Play," an adaptation of Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera." He also worked as a director and actor with the Shintsukiji Theater Company and the Shinkyo Theater Company. After the Second World War, he founded the Haiyuza Theatre Company and played a central role in the formation of the company, as well as in modern new theater activities. From 1950 onwards, he moved from the establishment of modern realistic theater such as Mafune Yutaka and Chekhov, and the Stanislavski system in Japan, to the introduction of Abe Kobo and Brechtian theater, and did outstanding work in theater education. His wife was the actress Kishi Teruko.

演出家、俳優。本名伊藤圀夫(くにお)。東京に生まれる。舞踊家伊藤道郎(みちお)、舞台装置家伊藤熹朔(きさく)の実弟。東京府立一中卒業。早稲田(わせだ)大学独文科聴講生を経て、1924年（大正13）創立の築地(つきじ)小劇場に文芸部員兼演技研究生として参加、旗揚げ演目の一つ『海戦』の水兵役で初出演。27年（昭和2）から4年間ドイツに留学をし、労働者の革命的演劇に参加。帰国直後、軽演劇人も含めた演劇人統一組織の東京演劇集団を結成し、ブレヒト作『三文オペラ』の翻案的脚色『乞食(こじき)芝居』を上演した。さらに新築地劇団や新協劇団で、演出家、俳優として活躍。第二次世界大戦後は俳優座を結成し、その中核を担うとともに、新劇活動の中心的役割をも果たした。50年（昭和25）以降はそれ以前の真船豊(まふねゆたか)やチェーホフなど近代写実劇やスタニスラフスキー・システムの日本における確立から、安部公房(あべこうぼう)やブレヒト劇などの紹介に進み、演劇教育面でも傑出した仕事をする。夫人は女優の岸輝子(てるこ)。
