Oguraike Pond

Japanese:
Oguraike Pond
This was once a lake located in the lowest part of the Kyoto Basin in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. At that time, it had an area of about 7 km2, a depth of 1.7 m, and an elevation of about 11 m. The Uji River once flowed directly into Oguraike Pond, but when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Fushimi Castle in 1594, he changed the course of the Uji River, and the pond has since served as a flood control reservoir and been known for its freshwater fish fishing, such as carp and crucian carp. From 1933 to 1939, national reclamation work was carried out, and the lake bottom became a rice field. Even now, the water is constantly drained by pumps, but in the flood of 1953, the reclaimed land was submerged, revealing the former lake. In recent years, the pond has been significantly developed into residential areas, especially around Kokura Station on the Kintetsu Railway Kyoto Line.
