Architect. Born in Niigata City. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University in 1928 (Showa 3). Travelled to France and studied under Le Corbusier. Returned to Japan two years later and joined Raymond Architectural Design Office. In 1935, he opened his own office. He was a leading figure in the modern architecture movement of the Showa period, submitting a new style plan to the Tokyo Imperial Museum design competition (1931) despite knowing it might be rejected. His activities after World War II were particularly notable. His major works include the Japan Mutual Bank Head Office (1952), Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall and Library (1954), Setagaya Civic Hall (1957), Kyoto Kaikan (1960), Tokyo Bunka Kaikan (1961), Saitama Prefectural Museum (1971), and Tokyo Marine and Fire Insurance Building (1974). He served as president of the Japan Institute of Architects from 1959 to 1962, and received the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1974.
