It is a collection of decisions of the Maritime Court, which was held mainly on the island of Oleron on the west coast of France in the 12th century, and was established as case law. The decisions were written on parchment and stored rolled up, so they are called the "Scrolls of Oleron" or "Jugements d'Oléron". The Oleron Maritime Code was widely used not only in France but throughout Europe, and was succeeded by the Visby Maritime Code in Germany, becoming the origin of English maritime law.
