Manyo-gana

Japanese: 万葉仮名 - まんようがな

Also known as magana. A phonetic way of writing Japanese, discarding the meanings of Chinese characters and using only sounds. Ongana, which borrow the sounds of the characters, are called otogana, and yama (mountain) is written as yamama and utsusemi as utsuzane. Kunkana, which borrow Japanese readings, are called kunkana, and yamato (Yamato) is written as hachikanato and natsukashi (nostalgia) is written as natsugashi. They have been used to write proper nouns since the 6th century, and in songs and letters since the 8th century. They were given this name because of the variety of uses in the Man'yoshu. Generally, they are simple characters with one stroke per character. 真仮名(まがな)とも。漢字のもつ意味を捨て，音だけを用いて日本語を表音的に表記するもの。字音を借りたものを音仮名といい，〈やま（山）〉を〈也麻〉，〈うつせみ〉を〈鬱瞻〉と書く。和訓を借りたものを訓仮名といい，〈やまと（大和）〉を〈八間跡〉，〈なつかし（懐し）〉を〈夏樫〉と書く。古く６世紀ごろから固有名詞の表記に用いられ，８世紀からは歌謡・書簡文などにも用いられた。ことに《万葉集》での用法が多彩であったのでこの名がある。一般には一字一音節の単純な字画の文字が多い。９世紀になって万葉仮名から平仮名，片仮名が創案されたが，正式の漢文の書物では長く日本語の表音的表記に使用された。→上代特殊仮名遣い
