…Japan completed the Shoukaku and Zuikaku just before the Pacific War, and then built the Taiho (about 29,000 tons), the first large aircraft carrier in Japan to feature a hurricane bow and bulletproof flight deck. Towards the end of the war, aircraft carriers became increasingly larger due to the increasing weight and mass operation of aircraft. The United States began construction of the Midway-class (about 45,000 tons), and the UK began construction of the Eagle (about 37,000 tons) and Ark Royal (about 43,000 tons), but completion of both was postponed until after the war. Japan hastily changed plans for the third ship of the Yamato-class battleships and built the Shinano (about 62,000 tons). …
