A one- or two-stringed bowed instrument used by the South Slavs, especially in Serbia, Bosnia, and Dalmatia in Yugoslavia, to accompany the singing of oral folk epics. In Serbo-Croatian it is called gusle. The soundboard is made of a rounded body (made of pine, ash, olive, etc.) with a membrane on the surface, and the strings are made of twisted horsehair. This lute-type stringed instrument is thought to have been introduced from West Asia to the Balkans around the 9th or 10th century. The players, called guslars, were protected by local nobles and rulers of autonomous cities and sang folk epics on themes such as the legend of the human sacrifice of the Skadar fortress, the legend of King Stefan Dušan and Prince Marko (the Marko legend), the Battle of Kosovo, and the deeds of the righteous bandits (hajduk).
