...The barb is a pleated bib-like garment made of white linen, which was later used as a nun's garment. From the 17th to the 19th century, a black veil with a triangular forehead called a peak was worn. In the 17th century, people of high social standing would wear black nightgowns, sheets, and covers during mourning, and even their beds were painted black, and these were often lent and borrowed between people.
