A former town in Nakakubiki County, southwest of Niigata Prefecture. Harano-machi, the center of the area, is in the northeastern part of the Takada Plain, and reservoir agriculture has developed here. As the area receives heavy snowfall, many people have long been migrant workers there as Echigo Toji (master brewers). Natural gas is also produced here. In January 2005, the town was incorporated into Joetsu City along with Yasuzuka-cho, Urakawara-mura, Oshima-mura, and Maki-mura in Higashikubiki County, Kakizaki-cho, Ogata-cho, Itakura-machi, Kiyosato-mura, Kubiki-mura, Nakago-mura, and Miwa-mura in Nakakubiki County, and Nadachi-cho in Nishikubiki County. 新潟県南西部,中頸城(なかくびき)郡の旧町。中心の原之町は高田平野北東部にあたり,溜池(ためいけ)農業が発達。豪雪地帯のため古くから越後杜氏(とうじ)として出稼(でかせぎ)する者が多い。天然ガスも産出。2005年1月東頸城郡安塚町,浦川原村,大島村,牧村,中頸城郡柿崎町,大潟町,板倉町,清里村,頸城村,中郷村,三和村,西頸城郡名立町と上越市へ編入。76.61km2。5556人(2003)。
