…A perennial herb of the Saxifragaceae family that grows on moist forest floors along valleys (illustration). The rhizome is short and thick with large basal leaves with long stalks. The leaf blade is shield-shaped, circular or oval, 20-30 cm in diameter, 7-13 shallow lobes, somewhat deeply incised at the base, and has low serrations at the edges. From May to July, it produces a flower stalk 30-60 cm tall, with pale yellow flowers in a cyme at the end. The flower stalk usually has two alternate leaves with short stalks. The calyx tube is shallowly bell-shaped, 5-8 mm in diameter, and the lower half is fused to the ovary. …
