Spanish poet. He participated as a soldier in the conquest of the New World, and wrote "La Araucana" (1559, 78, 89) based on his experience fighting the Araucanos, the native people of Chile. This work, which depicts the Araucanos resisting the Spanish army not as ferocious enemies but as courageous warriors, was highly praised by Lope de Vega as the first Latin American epic poem.
