They are also called the Proto-Malays. Malays who speak the Malay language, which belongs to the Austronesian language family, are culturally classified as either the Modern Malays or the Proto-Malays. Robert Heine-Geldern further classified the Proto-Malays into Primitive Malays (Primitivmalaien) and Old Malays (Altmalaien) based on their livelihood and other cultural aspects. Primitive Malays, whose main occupations until relatively recently were hunting and gathering, include the Jakun and Orang Dalat peoples of the Malay Peninsula, the Kubu people of the east coast of Sumatra, and the boat-dwelling and fishing peoples of Indonesia collectively known as the Orang Laut (meaning "people of the sea").

原マレー人ともいう。アウストロネシア語族に属するマレー語を話すマレー人は文化的に開化マレー人と原マレー人に分類される。ハイネ･ゲルデルンRobert Heine‐Geldernは生業その他の文化的観点から，原マレー人をさらに原始マレー人Primitivmalaienと古マレー人Altmalaienに分類した。比較的最近まで狩猟，採集を主たる生業としていた原始マレー人には，マレー半島のジャクン族，オラン･ダラット族，スマトラ島東岸のクブ族などのほか，オラン･ラウト族(〈海の人〉の意)と一括されるインドネシアの舟を住居とし漁労に従事する諸民族が含まれる。
