A coalfield stretching 8km east to west and 12km north to south across Mine and Toyoura counties in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The coalbed seams are intercalated in the Mine Group of the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic era. The coalbed seams expand and contract rapidly, and there are many areas where igneous rocks intrude. The coal is anthracite, but generally has a high ash content and low calorific value. The reserves are said to be around 45 million tons, and the Mine Coal Mine is currently operating at a modest rate, making it Japan's only anthracite producing area.
