The Council of Ancient Athens, equivalent to the Roman Senate. Its name comes from the fact that its assembly hall was on the Areopagus (the Hill of Ares) west of the Acropolis. Those who had served as archons were given life membership after examination. Its duties included trying murderers and arsonists, and supervising officials, but it lost its power with the development of democracy after the mid-5th century BC. → Related topics Ares | Pericles Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
