Omine Plant Group - Omine Plant Group

Japanese: 大嶺植物群 - おおみねしょくぶつぐん

A general term for fossil plants found in the Upper Triassic Mine Group (approximately 200 million years ago), which is distributed around Omine Town, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Fossils of various horsetails, ferns (especially many from the Equisetaceae family), cycad leaves, ginkgo trees, cones, and other plants from the Late Triassic period are beautifully preserved here. In many cases, only parts of a plant's fossil are known, but among the Omine flora, many are known in almost complete form, such as Asterotheca okafujii (Lucifera family) and Neocalamites (Equisetales), making them important paleontological materials.

山口県美祢市大嶺町周辺に分布する上部三畳系美祢層群(およそ2億年前)とよばれる地層中に含まれる化石植物の総称。三畳紀後期の各種のトクサ，シダ(とくにヤブレガサウラボシ科のものが多い)，ソテツ葉類，イチョウ，球果類などの化石がみごとに保存されている。植物の化石は，その植物体の一部分しか知られていない場合が多いが，大嶺植物群の中には，アステロセーカ･オカフジイAsterotheca okafujii(リュウビンタイ科)やネオカラミテスNeocalamites(トクサ目)など，植物の全体の体がほとんど完全な形で知られているものが多く，古生物学的に重要な資料となっている。
