…As one can easily imagine, given that realistic painting and a love of reality were traditional characteristics of Flemish art, in the mid-19th century, when realism flourished throughout Europe, outstanding painters such as Henri de Braekeleer (1840-88), who painted tranquil, light-filled interior scenes, and Guillaume Vogels (1836-96), who used his brushstrokes to paint poetic landscapes, emerged. In the second half of the 19th century, painters who were active in Paris rather than in their own country included Stevens, who painted elegant female customs, Rops, who specialized in demonic or lustful themes, and Henri Evenepoel (1872-99), who studied under Moreau and was influenced by impressionism. On the other hand, the group Les Bains (The Group of Twenty) held international-scale exhibitions in Brussels from 1884 onwards, which conveyed the latest trends in Paris, such as impressionism and neo-impressionism. …

…写実的描法と現実への愛着がフランドル美術の伝統的特性であったことから容易に想像されるように，写実主義が全ヨーロッパ的隆盛をみた19世紀半ば過ぎには，光に満たされた静謐な室内の情景を描いたデ･ブラーケレールHenri de Braekeleer(1840‐88)，筆触を生かして詩情豊かな風景を描いたフォーヘルスGuillaume Vogels(1836‐96)らの優れた画家が出た。19世紀後半，自国よりむしろパリで活動した画家としては，瀟洒（しようしや）な女性風俗を描いたステバンス，悪魔的あるいは好色的な主題を得意としたロップスや，モローに師事しかつ印象派の影響を受けたエバンプールHenri Evenepoel(1872‐99)がいる。一方，〈レ･バン(二十人組)〉が1884年以降ブリュッセルで国際的規模の展覧会を開いたことにより，印象主義，新印象主義等，パリの最新の動向が伝えられた。…
