Rochester
A city in the middle of the Medway in the southeast of England, England. It is located about 40 km southeast of London, facing the lower reaches of the Medway, which flows into the estuary of the Thames. In Roman times, the main road from the port of the Strait of Dover to London was a key transportation point that crossed the Medway, so a Roman town surrounded by defensive walls was built and called Durobrivae. In 604, King Athelbert of Kent built St. Andrew's Cathedral, and after the bishopric was established, it developed as a religious center, and in the Middle Ages it was given many privileges. Since the mid-19th century, industry has developed, and factories for cement, paper, machinery, etc. have been established. In addition to the Norman castle and the late Gothic cathedral that still retains Norman style in some parts, many old buildings such as the workhouse (1579) and the guildhall (1687) are preserved. Population 27,125 (2001).
