Irving Thalberg

1899‐1936
American filmmaker. He was one of the most talented Hollywood tycoons. Born in Brooklyn, New York to German-Jewish parents. After working as secretary to Universal founder Carl Laemmle, he became head of production at MGM under Louis B. Mayer, and it is said that Thalberg's creative talent was a major factor in MGM's golden age, including the idea of producing musical films. Unlike other tycoons who reigned by status or power, Thalberg confronted director Stroheim over Greed (1924) and logically asserted that the right to edit belonged to the producer, while sparing no expense in the production of The Big Parade (1925), even having director King Vidor shoot additional spectacular scenes. It was said that "Thalberg doesn't make films, he remakes them."

アメリカの映画製作者。ハリウッドの〈タイクーン(帝王)〉と呼ばれた実力者のなかでも際だった才能を見せた。ユダヤ系ドイツ人の両親の下にニューヨークのブルックリンに生まれる。ユニバーサルの創立者カール･レムリの秘書をへてルイス･B.メイヤーのもとでMGMの製作担当となり，ミュージカル映画の製作の着想など，MGMの黄金期の業績はタルバーグの創造的才能によるところ多大であるとされている。地位や権力によって〈君臨〉した他の〈タイクーン〉とは異なり，たとえば《グリード》(1924)をめぐって監督のシュトロハイムと対決して編集権は製作者にあることを論理的に主張する一方，《ビッグ･パレード》(1925)の製作には費用を惜しまず，監督のキング･ビダーにスペクタクル場面を追加撮影させたりして，〈タルバーグは映画をつくるのではなく，映画をつくり直すのだ〉といわれた。
