The world's largest general food manufacturer. Founded in 1866 as a Swiss manufacturer of cereals for infants. In 1938, the company experienced rapid growth with its instant coffee business, and later expanded into chocolate and processed foods. It acquired well-known foreign brands to solidify its position as the top company. Its flagship brand, Nescafe, is widely known in Japan and has long reigned as the world's top instant coffee brand. Its mineral water brand, Perrier, is also the world's top brand. Other well-known brands include Maggi soup and Kit Kat chocolate. The company's headquarters are in Vevey, Switzerland. It has over 500 factories in 80 countries around the world. Its sales for the fiscal year ending December 2011 were 83.6 billion francs, of which 50% was in Europe and the US. The Japanese subsidiary, Nestle Japan, was established in 1960 by merging the Kobe branch of Nestle and Awaji Condensed Milk. The headquarters is in Kobe. The capital of the Nestle Japan Group in 2003 was 20 billion yen.
