Japanese: 重婚 - じゅうこん（英語表記）bigamy

When a person who has a spouse marries twice. Bigamy is prohibited under the Civil Code (Article 732), and marriage registrations that violate this rule will not be accepted (Article 740). Even if a marriage is accepted in error, it may be annulled at the request of the parties involved (Article 744). Under the Criminal Code, bigamy is a crime and is punishable by law (Article 184). However, all of the above applies to legally-formal marriages, and does not apply to de facto marriages. However, there is a strong belief that couples in bigamous common-law marriages should not be given the same protection as ordinary common-law marriages.

配偶者のある者が重ねて婚姻をすること。民法上，重婚は禁止され (732条) ，これに違反した婚姻届は受理されない (740条) し，また誤って受理されても関係者の請求によって取消されることになっている (744条) 。刑法では重婚は犯罪とされ，処罰の対象とされる (184条) 。ただし，以上はいずれも法律上の正式の婚姻についていえることであり，事実上の婚姻についてはこの限りではない。ただ，重婚的な内縁関係の夫婦に対しては，普通の内縁の夫婦のような保護を与えないという考え方が強い。
