Born: 1293 Ruisbroek near Brussels Died December 2, 1381. Groenendael. Flemish mystic. From 1317 to 1343, he was a priest at the Church of Saint-Gudre in Brussels. In 1343, he founded the Augustinian monastery at Groenendael near Waterloo, and as its first abbot, he devoted himself to meditation, mystical writings, and practical activities to inspire society. His teachings and movements had a great influence not only on the later devotio moderna (modern piety) movement, but also on mystical theology in France, Germany, and other countries. His main works are De Spieghel der ewigher Salicheit (The Mirror of Blessing) and Die Chierheit der gheesteliker Brulocht (The Nobility of the Spiritual High Tide) (1350).
