Loango was a kingdom that existed in central Africa, on the Atlantic coast of the right bank of the Congo River (Zaire River), in what is now the People's Republic of Congo. According to oral tradition and other sources, the foundations of the kingdom were established in the 14th century by a group of blacksmiths and warriors. It had close ties with the Tiyo Kingdom further north and the Kongo Kingdom that flourished on the opposite bank of the Congo River, and there are myths that attribute the founder of each dynasty to the same god. The king and royal authority (called Lwangu) were linked to the worship of ancestral spirits and earth spirits, and are mentioned in JG Frazer's The Golden Bough as an example of a "divine king" who should guarantee the prosperity of the country.
