…The author is anonymous, but is generally thought to have been Crotus Rubianus (real name Johannes Jäger, c. 1480-c. 1545), a student at the University of Erfurt, or Hutten. The occasion for this was the persecution of the Jews by the converted Jew Johannes Pfefferkorn (1469-1522/23), and his conflict with the humanist Reuchlin, who sought to preserve Jewish studies and study ancient texts from an academic point of view. Pfefferkorn sought the help of Emperor Maximilian, and with the strong support of the Dominican Order to which he had converted, as well as the support of stubborn theologians, mainly from the Cologne University Theology Department, he often resorted to violent measures to destroy or confiscate Jewish books, persecuted Reuchlin for trying to prevent this, and finally appealed to the Roman Catholic Church. …
