The longest river in France, flowing west through central France. It has a total length of 1,020 km and a drainage area of 115,000 ^km2 . It originates in the eastern Massif Central, flows north, turns southwest in the Paris Basin, and empties into the Bay of Biscay. Its tributaries include the Maine, Allier, Cher, Indre, and Bienne. The upper reaches are used for power generation, the lower reaches for water transportation, and it is connected to other river systems by numerous canals. The Loire Valley downstream of Orléans is home to many aristocratic castles, including the Château de Chambord, known for its superb design, and is also famous as a tourist destination. In 2000, the entire river valley was registered as a World Heritage Site.

フランス中央部を西流する同国最長の川。全長1020km，流域面積11万5000km²。マシフ・サントラル東部に発し北流，パリ盆地で南西に転じ，ビスケー湾に注ぐ。支流はメーヌ，アリエ，シェール，アンドル，ビエンヌなど。上流部は発電，下流部は水運に利用され，多数の運河で他水系に結ばれる。オルレアンより下流のロアール河谷には，秀逸なデザインで知られるシャンボール城館をはじめ貴族の居城が多く，観光地としても有名で，2000年にこれら一帯の河谷が世界文化遺産に登録された。
