[ I ] benzil. diphenylethanedione. C 14 H 10 O 2 (210.23). Also called bibenzoyl. Produced by oxidation of benzoin (oxidation with nitric acid or oxidation with copper sulfate in pyridine in air). Yellow columnar crystals (recrystallized from ethanol). Melting point 95 °C, boiling point 346-348 °C, 188 °C (1.6 kPa). Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, and benzene. Reduced to deoxybenzoin. Addition of potassium alcohol and heating causes a rearrangement to be benzilic acid (benzilic acid rearrangement). Benzil dioxime has three isomers: α (melting point 237 °C), β (melting point 206 °C), and γ (melting point 166 °C). Used as a photopolymerization initiator, printing ink, and organic synthesis raw material. [CAS 134-81-6] [ II ] benzyl. The name of the phenylmethyl group, C 6 H 5 CH 2 -, obtained by removing one H atom from the side-chain methyl group of toluene. 【Ⅰ】benzil.diphenylethanedione.C14H10O2(210.23).
