There are high-rise buildings such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, and Jingu Gaien Garden, as well as many educational facilities such as Waseda University. [2] (From the fact that it was a new post station established in 1698 between Nihonbashi and Takaido on the Koshu Kaido) A place name in the southwestern part of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. It is divided into 1st to 7th chome. During the Edo period, it was known as Naito Shinjuku, a post station on the Koshu Kaido road. With the opening of the Chuo Line and the introduction of private railways, it rapidly developed into a bustling downtown area from the end of the Taisho period. [3] The name of the area centered around Shinjuku Station, a major terminal for JR and private railways. Shinjuku Station has the highest number of passengers in Japan. It is also home to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and is developing as the new urban center of Tokyo.

[1] 〘名〙 (「しんしゅく」とも) 新たに設けられた宿場。新しい宿場。※吾妻鏡‐建暦元年(1211)六月二六日「海道可立新宿事、度々雖其沙汰、未遵行之由」[2][一] 東京都二三区の一つ。昭和二二年(一九四七)四谷・牛込・淀橋の三区が合併して成立。武蔵野台地東端の淀橋台地にある。江戸時代、東半部には武家屋敷が多く、現在は住宅地となる。東京都庁などの高層ビル街や、新宿御苑・神宮外苑があり、早稲田大学などの文教施設も多い。[二] (甲州街道の日本橋と高井戸宿との間に元祿一一年(一六九八)新しく設けられた宿駅であるところから) 東京都新宿区南西部の地名。一~七丁目に分かれる。江戸時代は甲州街道の宿駅、内藤新宿として知られた。中央本線の開通・私鉄の乗入れにより、大正末期から繁華街として急速に発展した。[三] JR・私鉄の一大ターミナル新宿駅を中心とする地域の呼称。新宿駅の乗降客数は日本一。都庁も置かれ、東京都の新都心として発展している。
