Production index

An index based on a standard value that makes it easy to compare the trends in individual or overall production activities over time or region. Although there are cases where the trend in production value is indexed, it is generally considered to mean the production volume index since it is created based on the trend in production volume. In this case, it corresponds to the price index among various economic indicators.

There are two types of production (quantity) indexes: individual production indexes, which show the production trends of individual items as an index, and comprehensive production indexes, which are compiled by aggregating these by industry, use, or region, etc. The latter is a synthesis of the relative changes of different individual items, and is usually compiled by a weighted average using the added value or production value of each item as the weight.

In Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry compiles the "Indices of Industrial Production" by industry, use and region mainly based on the Production Statistics and publishes them monthly. The compile method is the Laspeyres formula weighted by value added. The production index for agriculture, forestry and fisheries is compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and uses the Laspeyres formula weighted by production value.

個々の生産活動あるいは総合的な生産活動の動きを、時間的あるいは地域的な差異を比較しやすいように、基準となる数値を設け、それに基づいて指数として表したもの。生産金額の動きを指数化する場合もあるが、一般には生産数量の動きを対象として作成されるため、生産数量指数を意味するものと考えられている。この場合には、経済諸指標のなかで物価指数に対応するものとなる。

　生産（数量）指数には、個々の品目についての生産動向を指数として示す個別生産指数と、それらを産業別、用途別、あるいは地域別などに集計して作成される総合生産指数とがある。後者は個々の異なった品目の相対的な変化を合成したものであるが、その作成方法としては、品目ごとの付加価値あるいは生産金額をウェイトとした加重平均によるのが普通である。

　わが国では、経済産業省によって「鉱工業生産指数」が、おもに生産動態統計に基づいて業種別、用途別、地域別に作成され、毎月公表されている。作成方式は、付加価値ウェイトのラスパイレス算式によっている。農林水産業に関する生産指数は、農林水産省によって作成され、こちらは生産金額ウェイトのラスパイレス算式が用いられている。
