Eigenji Temple

Japanese: 永源寺 - えいげんじ

This is the former town area in the eastern part of Higashiomi City, in the southeastern part of Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the western slope of the Suzuka Mountains and the upper reaches of the Aichi River. In 1955, Ichihara Village and Eigenji Village were merged to form Higashiomi City. In 2005, it merged with one city and three towns, Yokaichi City, Gokasho Town, Aito Town, and Koto Town, to form Higashiomi City. Most of the area is mountainous, and forestry has been practiced there since ancient times. Mandokoro, located in the Oike River basin, a tributary of the Aichi River, is a tea-producing area. Kimigahata and Hirudani, located in the upper reaches, are famous as the birthplace of woodworkers (→kijiya). Arable land is developed along the Aichi River in the west, and produces rice. Eigenji, located near the mouth of the Aichi River, is the head temple of the Eigenji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, has many cultural assets, and the surrounding area is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves. Eigenji Dam is located upstream. The entire eastern area belongs to Suzuka Quasi-National Park.

滋賀県南東部，東近江市東部の旧町域。鈴鹿山脈の西斜面，愛知川上流域を占める。 1955年市原村，永源寺村が合体して町制。 2005年八日市市，五個荘町，愛東町，湖東町の1市3町と合体して東近江市となった。大部分は山地で，古くから林業が行なわれた。愛知川支流御池川流域の政所は茶の産地。その上流域にある君ヶ畑，蛭谷は木地師 (→木地屋 ) 発祥の地として有名。耕地は西部愛知川沿いに開け，米を産する。愛知川の谷口近くにある永源寺は臨済宗永源寺派の本山で，文化財が多く，付近は紅葉の名所。上流に永源寺ダムがある。東部一帯は鈴鹿国定公園に属する。
