Dokkoishi - Dokkoishi

Japanese: 独鈷石 - どっこいし
Dokkoishi - Dokkoishi

A polished or hammered stone tool similar in shape to the dokko (a Buddhist altar implement). It was developed mainly towards the end of the Jomon period, but some remain into the Yayoi period. It is around 10 to 20 centimeters long, with both ends shaped like a pickaxe, an axe or a hammer. Two ridges or a wide groove run all the way around the center, and in later periods it often becomes curved. It was apparently worn on the end of a stick and was a symbol of tribal authority. There are also examples painted crimson. Several hundred examples can be found, mainly in the Tohoku region.
