…The pathogen isolated from the deceased was a previously unknown new species of bacteria that did not grow on conventional artificial media but grew well on a special medium containing yeast extract. It was a gram-negative rod measuring 0.3-0.4 μm in width and 2-3 μm in length and was named Legionella pneumophilia . Serological testing revealed that it was the same as the pneumonia that had previously spread in a psychiatric hospital in Washington in 1973 and the influenza-like disease that had spread in a health care center in Pontiac, Michigan in 1968. …
