Toyokuni Shrine

Located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, this shrine is called "Houkoku-san." Formerly a special government-sponsored shrine. It was founded in 1598 at the foot of Mt. Amida-ga-mine to worship Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The following year, it was given the title of Toyokuni Daimyojin and the rank of Shoichi. Toyotomi Hideyori put Yoshida Kanemi of Yoshida Shrine (currently Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City) in charge of the shrine's affairs, appointed Kanemi's younger brother Shinryuin Bonshun as the shrine priest, and Kanemi's grandson Hagiwara Kaneyori as the chief priest. The regular festival days were August 18th, the anniversary of Hideyoshi's death, and April 18th, the day of the Seisengu, and thereafter, a grand festival was held every year. After the fall of the Toyotomi clan, Tokugawa Ieyasu suspended the name of the shrine, and decided to nail down the shrine building and let it decay. In 1868, the Meiji government decided to rebuild Toyokuni Shrine, and it was completed in 1880. There are also Toyokuni shrines in Nakamura Ward, Nagoya City, Chuo Ward, Osaka City, and Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, and these are known as the Four Toyokuni Shrines.

京都市東山区にあり，〈ほうこくさん〉と称される。旧別格官幣社。1598年豊臣秀吉をまつるため阿弥陀ヶ峰山麓に創建された。翌年豊国大明神の神号と正一位の神位が授けられた。豊臣秀頼は吉田神社（現京都市左京区）の吉田兼見(かねみ)に社務をつかさどらせ，兼見の弟神竜院梵舜(ぼんしゅん)を社僧に，兼見の孫萩原兼従(かねより)を神主に任命した。秀吉忌日の８月18日と正遷宮の行われた４月18日を例祭日とし，以後毎年盛大に執り行われた。豊臣氏滅亡後，徳川家康は社号を停止し，社殿は釘付けにして朽ちるに任せることとした。1868年維新政府は豊国社再建を決定，1880年に竣工した。なお名古屋市中村区，大阪市中央区，滋賀県長浜市にも豊国神社があり，豊国四社と称される。
