A prefecture-level city in the eastern part of Gansu Province, China. It has jurisdiction over one city district and six counties (as of 2016). It has a permanent population of 2,098,000 (2015). It is located in the upper reaches of the Jing River, a tributary of the Wei River, and is a key point on the transportation route connecting Guanzhong and Ningxia. In the Han dynasty, Anding County was established, as the stability of Guanzhong, the royal capital, depended on this place. Later, Jingzhou, Yuanzhou, Weizhou, etc. were established, and in the Jin dynasty, it became Pingliang Prefecture (county), and continued until the end of the Qing dynasty. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was established as a city, and temporarily reverted to a county, but in 1983 it became a city again. It is located on the Loess Plateau, and field farming, livestock farming, and light industry are well developed. Coal and limestone are also mined. To the west is Mount Kongtong, famous for the legend of the Yellow Emperor.
