… Japanese speed skating made remarkable progress in both skating technique and competition management during the Showa period, but it was Manchuria that far surpassed Japan in terms of technique. Three athletes who participated in the 1931 World Championships in Helsinki - Kitani Norio, Ishihara Shozo, and Kawamura Yasuo - were from Manchuria, and they also represented Japan in the following year's 3rd Winter Olympic Games (Lake Placid, USA) along with Junma Ruju from the mainland. Then, in the 4th Olympic Games in 1936 (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany), Ishihara Shozo came in 4th in the 500m. …
