King of Terror

...Since 1597, Oscar Méténier, Max Maurey and others have performed a succession of short plays that combine horror with extraordinary laughter, attracting audiences, and the troupe has gained a reputation for its horror stories in particular. Thanks to the efforts of André de Lorde, a resident playwright known as the "Prince de la Terreur" and known for his adaptations of EA Poe's novels, the expression "like Grand Guignol" has come to be used to refer to over-the-top melodramas and horror stories in general, and today this term is used to refer to such theatrical genres. After World War II, the troupe continued to maintain its tradition of horror stories, but also expanded into the world of crime novels, which it called the "série noire" (dark series). ...
