An edible one- or two-year-old legume crop (illustration). The plant is 0.4-1m tall, with an upright stem that is rectangular in cross section, hollow, flexible, and prone to lodging. The leaves are pinnately compound, with large stipules at the base of the petiole that partially embrace the stem. In late spring, two to six flowers are produced in short racemes that emerge from the leaf axils. The flowers are five-petaled, butterfly-shaped flowers with white or pale purple petals and conspicuous black spots on the standard petals. The pods are green and upright at first, but turn black as they mature, wrinkle, and droop. Each pod contains two to four seeds.

食用とするマメ科の一･二年生作物（イラスト）。草丈0.4～1mで，茎は直立し，断面は四角形で中空，柔軟で倒伏しやすい。葉は羽状複葉で，葉柄の基部には大型の托葉があり，茎を半ば抱く。晩春，葉腋（ようえき）から出る短い総状花序に2～6花をつける。花は5弁の蝶形花で，花弁は白，淡紫色で，旗弁に黒色斑紋があるのが目だつ。莢（さや）は初めは緑色で直立するが，成熟すると黒色になり，しわがよって下垂する。1莢内には2～4個の種子がある。
