In 1918, Toyo Kogyo Yonezawa Artificial Silk Manufacturing (Japan's first rayon factory) became independent as Teikoku Artificial Silk. After World War II, they expanded into acetate, then polyester fiber, nylon, and synthetic fibers. In 1962, the company changed its name to the current one. They are the top manufacturer of polyester fiber (trade name Tetoron) in Japan. They are actively expanding into pharmaceuticals and other non-textile sectors, and also overseas. The head office is in Osaka, with factories in Matsuyama, Mihara, and other locations. Capital in 2011 was 70.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 815.6 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is as follows: high-performance fibers 13, polyester fibers 13, chemical products 27, pharmaceuticals and medical 17, distribution/retail 27, and others 5. Overseas sales ratio is 37%.
