〘 noun 〙 A woody plant that is short and has an underdeveloped trunk. It is similar to azaleas and nandinas, and has trunks and branches that are difficult to distinguish, and is within two to three meters. 〘名〙 丈が低く、幹が発達しない木本植物。ツツジ、ナンテンなどの類で、幹と枝とが区別しにくく、二～三メートル以内のもの。現在では低木という。⇔喬木(きょうぼく)。※小学読本（1873）〈榊原芳野〉三「野草灌木の茂れるを以て」
