Arabic grammarian and prosody. He was of Azd tribe. Born in what is now Oman, he later moved to Basra. He represented the Basra grammar school and invented the Arabic notation system. He was the teacher of Shebawayh, who left behind the oldest Arabic grammar book. He also left behind the first Arabic dictionary, the Kitāb al‐'ayn. He was also well versed in ancient Arabic poetry, and discovered 15 of the 16 types of prosody it contains, paving the way for prosody. [Ikeda Osamu]
