Physical therapist - りぐく楽ょうほし (English spelling) physical therapist

A physical therapist is a specialist who performs physical therapy and is abbreviated as PT. Along with occupational therapists (OTs), who are occupational therapists, physical therapists are legally recognized medical professionals who work in medical rehabilitation. In 1965, the Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist Act (Act No. 137 of 1965) was enacted, and a national examination was held the following year. Eligibility to take the exam requires that after graduating from high school, one has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for the job for more than three years at a training facility designated by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare or a school designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. To become a physical therapist, one must pass this national examination and then be licensed by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare.

理学療法を行う専門職で、PTと略称される。作業療法の専門職である作業療法士occupational therapist（略称OT）とともに、医学的リハビリテーションに従事する者の身分制度として法的に認められた医療従事者である。1965年（昭和40）「理学療法士及び作業療法士法」（昭和40年法律137号）が制定され、翌年から国家試験が実施された。受験資格は、高等学校卒業後、厚生労働大臣の指定した養成施設か文部科学大臣の指定した学校において3年以上、業務に必要な知識および技能を修得した者となっており、理学療法士になるためには、この国家試験に合格したのち、厚生労働大臣の免許を受ける必要がある。
