A city in western Kagawa Prefecture facing the Seto Inland Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1899. It occupies the delta plains of the Toki River and Kanagura River, and includes parts of the Shiwaku Islands, including Hiroshima, Honjima, and Teshima. The city center is on the left bank of the Toki River. In 1597, Koma Chikamasa built a castle in Kameyama, and since 1658 it has developed as a castle town of the Kyogoku clan. In the late Edo period, it prospered as a wharf for boats to Kotohira Shrine. Since the Meiji period, it has been a garrison for the Army Infantry Regiment. Since 1964, an industrial complex has been developed by reclaiming land, and electrical machinery, chemical, and spinning factories have also moved in. In recent years, transportation equipment, electrical machinery, and lumber have been among the top industrial shipments. Fans are a specialty of the city. The remains of Marugame Castle and the Shiwaku Kinbansho (both historic sites) are located here. The Yosan Line and Takamatsu-Kotohira Electric Railway run through the city, and there are regular shipping routes to Shimotsui, Okayama Prefecture, and other locations on the opposite bank. In March 2005, Ayauta-gun's Ayauta-cho and Iiyama-cho were incorporated. Area: ^{111.78 km2} . Population: 110,473 (2010).

香川県西部，瀬戸内海に面する市。1899年市制。土器川，金倉川の三角州平野を占め，広島，本島，手島など塩飽(しわく)諸島の一部を含む。中心市街は土器川左岸にあり，1597年生駒親正が亀山に築城，1658年以来京極氏の城下町として発達。江戸後期には金刀比羅(ことひら)宮への船着場として繁栄。明治以降陸軍歩兵連隊の駐屯地となった。1964年から埋立てによる工業団地が造成され，電機，化学，紡績などの工場も進出した。近年は輸送用機器，電気機械，木材が工業出荷額の上位を占める。うちわを特産。丸亀城跡，塩飽勤番所跡（いずれも史跡）がある。予讃線，高松琴平電鉄が通じ，対岸の岡山県下津井などへ定期航路がある。2005年３月綾歌郡綾歌町，飯山町を編入。111.78km²。11万473人（2010）。
