Glacial landform

Japanese: 氷河地形 - ひょうがちけい（英語表記）glacial landform

A landform created by glacial action. It may also include landforms created by meltwater from glaciers. Examples of landforms created by the erosion of valley glaciers include cirques, U-shaped valleys, cut spurs, hanging valleys, spires, and grats, while examples of landforms created by the erosion of continental glaciers include glacial plains and nunataks. Rock surfaces eroded by ice are left with scratches, and smooth, bump-like protrusions with scratches, called ramshead rocks, can be seen on the valley floor. Fjords that develop on coasts are also a type of glacial landform. Landforms created by glacial deposition include moraine cones, drumlins, and eskers. Glacial landforms are unique landforms, and glacial landforms remain in Japan, helping to determine the age and scale of past glaciers.

氷河作用によってつくられる地形。氷河の融解水によって生じた地形を含めることもある。谷氷河の浸食作用によって生じる地形にはカール (圏谷) ，U字谷，切断山脚，懸谷，尖峰，グラートなどがあり，大陸氷河の浸食作用によって生じる地形には氷食平野，ヌナタクなどがある。氷食を受けた岩面には擦痕が残され，谷底には羊背岩と呼ばれる擦痕をもった円滑な瘤状突起群がみられる。海岸に発達するフィヨルドも氷食地形の一種。氷河の堆積作用によって生じる地形には堆石丘，ドラムリン，エスカーなどがある。氷河地形は特殊な地形で，日本でも氷河地形は残されており，これによって過去の氷河の時代や規模を決定するのに役立っている。
